By Derek Landy
Suitable age: 10 and above
Written by Derek Landy, this novel starts with the death of a bestselling writer, Gordon Edgley. Young Stephanie Edgley is his niece. When she attended her uncle’s funeral, a strange man wrapped in bandages enters the parlour. Little did she know that the man is magical detective, Skulduggery Pleasant. This begins an action-packed roller coaster of thrill and humour. Despite that Skulduggery Pleasant, a main protagonist, is a detective, this novel has little mystery resulting in a chaotic plot. However, the book is simple allowing readers to enjoy it without stressing their minds. The humour in this novel is very effective at enriching the story and providing the readers a good laugh. Recommended for readers searching for a straightforward yet entertaining read.
